What can I say? Everything is new, everything different. Everything is the same. Each day is filled with wide-eyed wonder, a sort of bewildered pride. My triumphs are small. I make breakfast, I manage to walk with Ruby and Lucy. I soothe my baby girl's panicked cries, sometimes without sobbing myself. Ruby's triumphs are awe-inspiring. She smiles. She holds her head up during tummy time. She stares into my eyes.
Only now am I beginning to wake up to the world around me, to see anything other than her bright blue eyes. Still, it's hard to pry myself away. How can such a tiny being so totally absorb everything around her?
What if we could, for even a moment, see the world through her eyes? What if we could once again experience the shock and delight as, each day, we could see a little further, see a little more color? What if we had learned to smile only a week or two ago? What if everything was new?
I can't tell you how much I look forward to the day Ruby can begin exploring a whole world of taste and texture. For now, she is completely content with her mama's milk. But one day, one day far too soon, she will pucker her lips at the taste of a lemon and widen her eyes at the taste of a pear.
And we will watch and wonder. Perhaps we will find inspiration in the delight of a baby. Perhaps we will be reminded of the beauty, the magic all around us. If we do, we will marvel at the buttery-smooth, tangy-sweet mango. We will breathe a deep, deep cleansing breath when we sip grassy matcha. When we munch on fresh, tender spinach, we will pause and give thanks.
Mango Matcha Superfood Smoothie
1-1/2 cups milk (I used homemade oat milk, but coconut, nut, goat's or cow's milk will do)
1 large frozen banana
1/2 cup frozen mango (you can also use one whole fresh mango)
1/2 cup fresh spinach or kale leaves
2 teaspoons matcha powder (more or less, depending on your taste preference)
1/2 tablespoon chia seeds
1-2 teaspoons agave or honey (optional)
1. Throw everything in a blender, starting with one cup of milk, and blend until smooth. Add more liquid if necessary. Pour into your favorite glass and serve immediately. Garnish with toasted coconut chips if you have some on hand.
